LONDON 2012

27 July and 29 August 2012

In the summer of 2012 London will host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games with thousands of athletes and hundreds of countries represented!

It's a great opportunity to celebrate, inspire and explore the many themes and topics which can be drawn out from such an occasion! So this page is dedicated to helping you do just that!

Looks a bit sparce?! This is a brand new section of the website - and so it's a work in progress! So please do revisit for updates and additions!

1. Olympic Hopefuls

With an estimated 10,500 competing in the 2012 Olympic Games and 4,500 competing in the Paralympic Games, this Assembly uses the Games as a springboard to explore what we mean by Hope and, more particularly, to explore the Christian Hope!

Depending on the age group, you may want to begin this assembly with a mock Medal Awards ceremony. Prepare some medals on ribbons and award medals for some silly categories! (For example, ‘The Chatty Award’ person who likes to talk a lot, ’The Cackle Category Award’ for the person with the funniest laugh; ‘The Cringe Cup’ for the person who tells the worst jokes, the ‘Ants in the Pants’ award for people who can’t keep still. Make up your own awards to relate to the children or young people you know are up for a laugh).

2. Struggle or Triumph?

Faster, higher, stronger’ goes the motto of the Olympic Games. What if we think that Sport just isn’t our thing? What can we learn from the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and how can it inspire us in life?

This Assembly helps us to explore the struggles of life and turns to the promise of Jesus: 'Those who endure to the end will gain everlasting life.'
